From an earlier *taflu, borrowed from a Germanic language, compare tafl
taulu
Standing alone, taulu means originally a framed picture or painting. Compounded with a defining word in front, the meaning has expanded to other uses, of which a few examples are given above. Some of those compounds, notably liitutaulu (blackboard), may be sometimes shortened to plain taulu, if there is no danger of confusion. In mathematics and statistics taulu is usually a table which contains relatively long-lasting information, whereas a table containing more variable or ad-hoc information is called taulukko.
