Debate Analysis: What They Got Wrong
October 03, 2008 Knight Ridder WASHINGTON - Sarah Palin and Joe Biden traded jabs, scored rhetorical points and occasionally stretched the truth or misspoke on foreign and domestic-policy issues in their vice presidential debate Thursday night. Both candidates had some stumbles on foreign policy. Palin, in criticizing Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s Iraq policy, said that President Bush’s Iraq troop “surge” plan had worked and that U.S. troop levels in Iraq are now back at
Congress passes bailout, focus shifts to fallout
NEW YORK/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Congress approved a $700 billion bank bailout on Friday, but stock markets fell as investors shifted attention to still-emerging fallout from the global credit crisis. The U.S. House of Representatives approved the financial rescue plan by a vote of 263-171. That sent the measure to U.S. President George W. Bush, who quickly signed it into law, concluding two weeks of high-stakes haggling in Washington that had roiled and captivated global markets.

Toshiba keen on Fujitsu’s hard-drive business
With Western Digital tipped to be negotiating with Fujitsu over acquiring the latter’s hard-drive business, Toshiba has thrown its hat into the fray. A Toshiba executive has told the Wall Street Journal that, if Fujitsu approached the company, they would consider putting in a bid of their own. Analysts expect Fujitsu to either break even or post a loss for their hard-drive business in their upcoming financial report, likely their motivation for exploring selling off the arm. However Fujit

By Bill Hare 10/03/2008 05:32:18 PM EST Whatever might have remained of the objective of using debates as a source of voter information and guidance was rudely shattered last night on a St. Louis stage after Republican media spin hands did their best to banish reason and logic out of existence and replace it with chilling Orwellian style 1984 rote garble. Based on any traditional debate format Joe Biden performed with precision skill. Sarah Palin's "performance" and that is labeling her e
NBC's Yang falsely asserted "Social Security will run out of money by 2041"
During the October 2 edition of NBC's Nightly News, NBC News correspondent John Yang falsely asserted, "At current rates, analysts say Social Security will run out of money by 2041." Later, Yang uncritically aired a clip of Sen. John McCain claiming, "The Social Security system is going to go broke; it will not be there for present-day men and women who are working." In fact, as Media Matters for America has noted, the 2008 Social Security trustees' report forecasts that, in the absence of a ch

Hello and welcome to a UPI White House Weekly.Vice Presidential candidates Joe Biden and Sarah Palin faced off this week in their first and only debate. The two clashed over issues like the economy, Iraq and health care. Political analysts say both candidates showcased confidence and neither made any major mistakes. That's especially good news for the first-term Alaska governor who had some slip-ups in a recent interview with news anchor Katie Couric. Polls show that more debate watchers believed that Biden won, but that Palin beat expectations and was overall more likeable in her delivery. The U.S. economic crisis has forced Senators John McCain and Barack Obama to refocus their financial messages on the campaign trail this week. Both nominees shifted away from their attacks on each other. Instead they intensified their calls for action from Congress. The Senate and House approved a $700 billion financial rescue plan this weeka bill that both McCain and Obama supported. Obama urged lawmakers to pass a plan and said that we're all going to need to sacrifice. McCain said that if bill were to fail in Congress again, the present crisis would have turned into a disaster.Senator John McCain is pulling his presidential campaign out of the state of Michigan. McCain's aides said they're surrendering the state and its 17 electoral votes to his rival, Senator Barack Obama. Michigan was one of the few states that went Democratic in the last four presidential elections, but the Arizona Senator believed he could take it back. Pennsylvania is another state that's reportedly becoming a challenge for McCain. Political strategists say that at this point, the presidential race is less of a national contest and more of a battle for individual states.Meanwhile, Senator Obama seems to be making some major gains in crucial battleground states. Polls show that voters in Florida, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada and Virginia are shifting toward the Democratic presidential nominee. Some are attributing this shift to the first presidential debate. But the contest is far from over yet with two more presidential debates ahead. That's all for nowthanks for watching and have a great day.

Rove Throws Conflict of Interest Stones From His Glass House
Rove Throws Conflict of Interest Stones From His Glass HouseHeartofdraknIsAlive3 min - 3 Oct 2008Karl Rove Throws Conflict of Interest Stones At Gwen Ifill From His Own Glass House On FOX News.http://www.newshounds.us/2008/10/02/karl_rove_throws_conflict_of_interest_stones_at_gwen_ifill_from_his_own_glass_house_on_fox_news.phpAs chrish predicted, the FOX News hissy fit du jour yesterday (10/1/08) was about debate moderator Gwen Ifill's supposed conflict of interest. She is writing a book about African American politics in the age of Obama and ipso facto the GOP network FOX News has decided that means that she is pro Obama with a conflict of interest. Never mind that this information was available weeks before McCain agreed to have Ifill moderate the Vice Presidential debate. I'm sure it's just a coincidence that the outrage developed in the wake of Palin's increasingly disastrous interviews which have prompted several prominent conservatives to question her capability. Republican Karl Rove joined the "conflict of interest" whine fest while concealing, as he usually does, his own role as an informal advisor to the McCain campaign and appearing on FOX News as a supposedly detached political observer. With video. It was another unbalanced night on Hannity & Colmes last night (10/1/08), another night where partisanship trumped all, even on the night the United States Senate voted for a $700 billion bailout for the finance industry. The show spent a good amount of time with a couple of FOX News reporters discussing the Senate vote. But the only analysts were Republicans: Rove and former Congressman Dennis Hastert, neither of whom have any notable acumen on the economy or finances. In a clear indication that FOX News was more interested in the political angle than anything else, Rove spent the entire hour with the show. Not once was his connection to McCain mentioned. At the end of the show, Hannity and Rove turned to the issue of Ifill. Hannity began with an untruth. He said, We found out tonight that the moderator, PBS journalist Gwen Ifill, is in fact writing a book due out on Inauguration Day. It's called The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama. A lot of people feel - apparently the McCain campaign didn't know about it a lot of people feel that this is a clear conflict of interest. As I posted above, Ifill's book was public information for two weeks before the McCain camp agreed to the debate moderators. If they didn't know, they ought to blame themselves, not Ifill. But either the We report. You decide network didn't do its work either or it didn't live up to its own motto. With a straight face, Rove, the McCain advisor identified only as FOX News Contributor by the banner on the screen, said, She had an obligation to raise this. She needed to be thoughtful about this and raise this a potential conflict of interest... It's a problem. Rather than consider any McCain incompetence, Rove went on to blame the debate commission for not asking if anyone had a conflict of interest. He added, This is appalling that (Ifill) did not have the sensibility that this would be a potential conflict.Hannity continued by asking Rove what advice he had for Sarah Palin in the debate the following night.Be yourself, Rove said. He went on to repeat his outlandish allegation that Palin had been over-prepared for her CBS interviews with Katie Couric. After extolling Palin's convention speech as exciting, fresh and new and herself (and scripted, which he did not mention), Rove said, And I saw somebody in the (Charles) Gibson interview who did a pretty good job. And in the Couric interview it looked like they had stuffed her with too many facts and prepped her just like they over-prepped Ronald Reagan for debates.Sure she was. She just had so many facts in her l'il head that she couldn't think of a single instance of John McCain calling for more oversight of Wall Street, a single newspaper or magazine she reads, a single Supreme Court decision she disagrees with (other than Roe v. Wade) and continued to insist that living near Russia enhanced her foreign policy credentials. I'm sure all that was scripted, probably to enhance her Joe Sixpack image. Right.
