The images were keyed in After Effects to give a cleaner background, and to allow each sequence to connect more easily. Additional animation was created entirely in After Effects, such as the falling leaves and the girl's skipping rope.

In 2008 CERN will launch the world's largest Physics experiment - The Large Hadron Collider - #2 on "The Wonders of the Modern World" according to CNN on a poll on its website . According to the poll, the #1 wonder of the modern world was invented at CERN as well by Tim Berners-Lee - We call this the "World Wide Web". This collaboration is bringing together scientists from all over the world to discover the next level of building blocks in the universe. The four giant detectors will generate up to 1% of the total information generated on the planet in 2008 and beyond. Using over 100,000 compute cores, storing over 15 peta-bytes per year on the world's largest grid, This team of 6,000 scientists and hundreds of software developers in 80 countries are pioneering high energy physics.

  • Why build an accelerator?

I was at home earlier this week, and I got a surprising question from Jamie (my wife): If Fermilab scoops the LHC and finds the Higgs, and then the LHC doesn’t find anything will it be a total waste, and why should anyone ever build another huge accelerator again? From a scientific point of view, Jamie is absolutely right. Our model of what the fundamental particles are in the Universe is pretty complete: we know how to make up all the normal matter in the Universe and we know all the partic

  • Out of Hours - September Gone

There is something of a WOWNDADI blog tradition that I write an end of month wrap up post. This month’s is a little extended and a little late, since September was no ordinary month. It was not so much because of Web 2.0 Expo and the Digital Mission, although I learnt lots from them, but because of events in the financial world. It gives pause to think. Having been in both London and New York during the last few weeks, I watched the layoffs in both places at first hand. I’m not going to attem

Restart of the Large Hadron Collider scheduled for next year October 3rd 2008 Photo Courtesy of CERN When the World’s largest particle accelerator was fired up on September 10, it only got to operate for about a little over week before an electrical problem, causing a liquid Helium leak, forced the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to shut down operations. Researchers over at the European nuclear-research organization (a.k.a. CERN) have [...] Read More Tags: Accelerator, Cern, Electrical Probl

The money markets are in confusion. The dominoes are falling quicker than the protons can whizz around the CERN particle accelerator! The latest casualties, if you haven’t heard (and you would’ve had to have been in deep space not to have heard), are the financial bedrock of the USA, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The government has had to intervene with a titanic rescue package just to keep these financial establishments in business! It’s a very sorry state of affairs but in all honesty, a stat

  • CERN Launches The Biggest Computing Grid In The World

Today, CERN launched the largest computing grid in the world which is destined to analyze the data coming from world’s biggest particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The computing grid consists of more than 140 computers centers from around the world in order to be capable to analyze 15 million GB of LHC’s data. • CERN Officially Unveils Its Grid: 100,000 Processors, 15 Petabytes a Year

CERN today officially unveiled the massive computer network that will crunch the enormous amount of data coming from CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC). CERN expects that the LHC will produce around 15 petabytes of data every year. While the LHC was in its planning stages, CERN's IT department decided that the only realistic way to handle this amount of data would be by relying on the then still novel idea of grid computing. CERN's grid consists of 100,000 processors at 140 scientific instituti
