  • X-Prize: World ECO Challenge

X-Prize idea creating biomethane from algae in huge quantities in the ocean.Opppps...a few details to correct from the video: More consistent contest targets are: 400 million MWh (Californias demand for a year), and 100 million tonnes of CO2 (Germanys vehicle emissions for a year), and sustainably recycle nutrients, and increase species diversity, and either 200 million tonnes of fish (feeds Africa for a year) or 2 million hectares less ocean dead zone.Calculations based on current experience with algae growth and anaerobic digestion suggest 10,000,000 hectares of ocean surface (0.03% or about the size of Cuba) would produce World Eco Challenge volumes each year. Generally, the gas produced by anaerobic digestion is 60% CH4 (or significant H2) and 40% CO2. At pressures in excess of a few atmospheres, the differential dissolution of CH4 and CO2 allow separation of the two gases with very little energy. At the pressures and temperatures available in the ocean (20 to 400 bar, 3º to 30º C) anaerobic digestion proceeds, but CO2 dissolves in seawater more than 10x (by moles) than CH4. When pressures exceed 50-bar (500 meters deep), the CO2 may be produced as a liquid. See PODenergy.org for more details.
