Trends in organic farming in Croatia
The agronomist, Sonja Karoglan Todorovic, reckons organic farming reflects overall social developments, and, as the head of Ecologica, she should know what she is talking about. Launched eight years ago, the organization defends the interests of Croatia’s organic farmers and contributes to their training, a task that requires a lot of determination.

So lil' Swell and I met up again in Edmonton in the very early morning of October 10th. I had arrived in Edmonton in the early afternoon and promptly went to my parent's place and had a nap. Eventually I had to wake from my slumber to go and get Swell from the airport. I got to use Edmonton's version of a fancy dandy ring road for the very first time. Being directionally challenged like my mother I was worried when she said; "Whatever you do don't take the ring road. I always get lost when I ta
Agriculture: Unsustainable Resource Depletion Began 10,000 Years Ago
This is a guest post by Peter Salonius, a Canadian soil microbiologist. According to Peter, humanity has probably been in overshoot of the Earth’s carrying capacity since it abandoned hunter gathering in favor of crop cultivation (~ 8,000 BCE). The problem is that soil needs tightly woven natural ecosystems to properly recycle nutrients and prevent soil erosion. Earth’s inhabitants have devised a whole series of approaches to increase the amount of food that can produced, starting first wit
Bye Bye Buzz?
There really is no substitute for honeybees. Whether it's the gazillion tonnes of pesticides we pollute our food, land and water with every year, an Israeli virus, extreme lack of diversity through our insane enslavement to monoculture, or genetically modified plants, the honey bees are dying at an alarming rate. They are a vital part of the ecosystem which provides us with food, and everything else we really need for that matter. What can you do about it? Make your yard Bee Friendly for a start

The Eco-valley programme has a wide range of experience related to bio farming (mostly in vegetables, fruit, and flower gardening), in field grown vegetable farming, community self support, and provides answers to questions about sustainable agriculture’s theories and real life experiences. The aim of the programme is to help further the functions within, and to introduce the technologies used to a wider audience. There are more international and local research facilities with similar experien

Fighting to save, respect the girl child By Li Xing (China Daily) Updated: 2008-10-24 07:54 A visit to a school usually brings out a smile in an adult, seeing children play and create a cacophony that strangely sounds melodious. But former gymnastics champion Mo Huilan felt a bit sad when she visited a school in the mountains of Jingzhou in Hubei province over the weekend. “I could see the number of boys was three times that of the girls,” she wrote in her blog. “It seems that many families

La partie méridionnale, que les Libanais appellent Bekaa Ouest du fait de l'axe NE-SW de la plaine, est limitée par le Jabal Gharbi à l'ouest et le Mont Hermon à l'est.¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤Beqaa (Arabic: البقاع, valley; also transliterated as Bekaa, Biqâ or Becaa) is a fertile valley in east Lebanon. The Romans considered the Beqaa Valley to be a major agricultural source, and today it remains Lebanons most important farming region. The Beqaa is a fertile valley in Lebanon, located about 30 km (19 miles) east of Beirut. The valley is situated between the Mount Lebanon to the west and the Anti-Lebanon mountain ranges to the east. It forms the northeasternmost extension of the Great Rift Valley, which stretches from Syria through the Red Sea into Africa. Beqaa Valley is about 120 km (about 75 miles) in length and has an average width of about 16 km (about 10 miles). It has a Mediterranean climate of wet, often snowy winters and dry, warm summers. The region receives limited rainfall, particularly in the north, because Mount Lebanon creates a rain shadow that blocks precipitation coming from the sea. The northern section has an average annual rainfall of 230 mm (9 inches), compared to 610 mm (24 inches) in the central valley. Two rivers originate in the valley: the Orontes (Asi), which flows north into Syria and Turkey, and the Litani, which flows south and then west to the Mediterranean Sea.From the 1st century BC, when the region was part of the Roman Empire, the Beqaa Valley served as a source of grain for the Roman provinces of the Levant. Today the valley makes up 40 percent of Lebanon's arable land. The northern end of the valley, with its scarce rainfall and less fertile soils, is used primarily as grazing land by pastoral nomads, mostly migrants from the Syrian Desert. Farther south, more fertile soils support crops of wheat, corn, cotton, and vegetables, with vineyards and orchards centered around Zahle. The valley also produces hashish and cultivates opium poppies, which are exported as part of the illegal drug trade. Since 1957 the Litani hydroelectricity project—a series of canals and a dam located at Lake Qaraoun in the southern end of the valley—has improved irrigation to farms in Beqaa Valley.¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤
