Oomph Microformats Toolkit
I'm taking a short (I promise) break from my Getting Semantic With Microformats series because I need it, and I wanted to spend some time playing with and reviewing the Oomph microformats toolkit that MIX Online released this week. This way, you (my beloved four readers) still get some microformat goodness, and I get a much-needed break from the intense research and writing I've been doing. Let's get started, shall we? Using Microformats to Find Carmen Sandiego
When I first heard the word "microformat", I have to admit that I thought about, well, a micro format. Making something small and more specific, to be precise. It wasn't until I actually sat down and looked at the wikipedia article that I got even a decent understanding for what they were, although what they were and understanding the uses of them was still something a bit out of reach. I was, of course, working on this for a client and as Mindfly has microformats sitting on their front pag
Pumpkins with Oomph
Five years ago I was exploring the idea of embedding active chunks of structured data into web pages. Back then I used the phrase interactive microcontent. Nowadays, we say microformats. If you’re a reader of this blog you’re probably technically-oriented, and you already know about microformats. But most people aren’t, and they don’t. The challenge has always been to provide an end-to-end experience that will enable non-technical folks to create and use these nuggets of semantic web goodness
Mad Libz, Yo!
It seems that quite a few people like the signup form on Huffduffer. This pleases me. I share Luke W.’s rallying cry that Sign up forms must die! While I wasn’t able to kill off the signup form on Huffduffer entirely, I was at least able to make it human-friendly. Ideally what I’d like to do is build a signup form that has one text field—What’s your URL?—and use that single piece of information to derive login credentials (OpenID), identity (hCard) and relationships (XFN). Alas, time constrai
Internet Explorer Gets Some Oomph
Microformats are supported quite well in Firefox these days thanks to the Operator extension, but the 70-80% of web users still using Internet Explorer might have been wondering what all the fuss is about. Now, thanks to MIX Online, they finally have a chance to find out. Oomph: A Microformats Toolkit was released yesterday and can now be downloaded along with full source code. There are various parts of the toolkit, some CSS stylesheets and authoring tools, but the main bit I'm interested in
IL2008: Wisniewski on quick website tune-ups
Jeff Wisniewski’s IL2008 presentation on quick website tuneups gave me a few things to think about. Underpinning the talk (an abbreviated version of which appeared in Computers in Libraries in June) was the notion that a website overhaul is a long-term solution that shouldn’t get in the way of immediate improvements that can serve users right away. Since our redesign is slated for 09/10, I think we should be thinking about implementing some tips, especially since some of them can be ported to

Over the past several months, the battleground for my name, “Robert Elwell,” as a search term has been like trench warfare. While getting it from the top 30 to the top five in months prior, my personal website often suffered in terms of optimization due to a lack of external links and somewhat low keyword density for my name. Being on a .edu site, it had a slight advantage in some senses. I began joining a number of social networking services that were search engine visible so that I could do m
Getting Semantic With Microformats, Part 5: hAtom
Over the course of this series, I've discussed the various microformats I've implemented on A Blog Not Limited: rel-based, XFN, hCard and hCalendar. Now, it's time to talk about the hAtom microformat, which adds semantics and structure to web content that could be syndicated, such as blog posts or news articles. Adding XFN to hCards in ASP.Net
I said on Friday that I'd show you how to add XFN markup to an hCard. First off though I should probably say what XFN is... XFN stands for XHTML Friend Network. It's basically a way to show relationships (think MySpace, etc.) by simply using hyperlinks. In order to show these relationships we simply add a rel attribute to a hyperlink and use a set of pre defined relationship types (friend, met, crush, etc.). It's rather basic, doesn't take much, and doesn't cause any compatibility issues (
If you’re interested in Microformats, do yourself a favor and head over to my friend Emily Lewis’ site A Blog Not Limited. I’ve been played with Microformats for a while, but these informative articles pushed me over the edge: Getting Semantic With Microformats, Part 1: rel-based Getting Semantic With Microformats, Part 2: XFN Getting Semantic With Microformats, Part 3: hCard Getting Semantic With Microformats, Part 4: hCalendar Getting Semantic With Microformats, Part 5: hAtom Getting Semanti
With the momentum of Microformats burgeoning, the Mix Online team (http://www.visitmix.com) decided to build Oomph: A Microformat Toolkit. Our main goal with Oomph is to make Microformats more accessible for users, developers and designers. Oomph is an amalgamation of applications: an Internet Explorer Add-in built in C++ that finds Microformats on a page; a cross-browser HTML overlay built using JQuery that aggregates Microformats; a set of beautiful CSS styles for Microformats; and a Windows Live Writer plug-in written in WinForms for inserting hCards. And, the entire project is up on Codeplex (http://codeplex.com/oomph), ready for community contribution and extensibility.
