With the momentum of Microformats burgeoning, the Mix Online team (http://www.visitmix.com) decided to build Oomph: A Microformat Toolkit. Our main goal with Oomph is to make Microformats more accessible for users, developers and designers. Oomph is an amalgamation of applications: an Internet Explorer Add-in built in C++ that finds Microformats on a page; a cross-browser HTML overlay built using JQuery that aggregates Microformats; a set of beautiful CSS styles for Microformats; and a Windows Live Writer plug-in written in WinForms for inserting hCards. And, the entire project is up on Codeplex (http://codeplex.com/oomph), ready for community contribution and extensibility.

OpenSocial, OpenID, and OAuth: Oh, My!Joseph Smarr (Plaxo)A number of emerging technologies will soon collectively enable an open social web in which users control their information and it can flow between multiple sites and services. OpenID, OAuth, microformats, OpenSocial, the Social Graph API, friends-list portability, and more will be discussed, as well as a coherent vision for how the pieces fit together and how developers can start taking advantage of them now.

iPhone 2.0 and GeoTags Freeline Report 05.27.09
iPhone 2.0 and GeoTags Freeline Report 05.27.09bradfallon2 min - 27 May 2008http://www.freelinereport.comEver wanted to talk to Martians on MySpace? That future could be a distinct possibility soon, if NASA has its way. They're bringing all the details and goals of the new mars mission online. They plan on providing real time images of the space craft landing. This will allow millions of people across the world to experience the Martian landscape first hand. And if we see any little green men, we'll make sure to let them friend us on MySpace and Facebook.http://www.freelinereport.com/freeline-5-27-08If you believe you are one of those people who have already met a little man from outer space, then Spielberg's new venture should be right up your alley. It's a website called The Rising, and it's out to create a Facebook style social platform for UFO abductees. ET no longer needs to phone home- he just has to post a bulletin on his profile.http://www.freelinereport.com/freeline-5-27-08For those of us still trapped here on earth, we've got a link to Wired's new How-To section, about using the internet to live green. It's set up in a wiki format, so if you know anything about living with a low carbon footprint, you can go and share your knowledge with the world.http://www.freelinereport.com/freeline-5-27-08Earlier on the Free Line we showed you several free online applications that let you add Geo Tags to pictures, including one that used your cellphone. Looks like someone at Apple watches these videos and knows what the public wants. The next version of iPhone, 2.0, will have geo tagging for photos built in directly. Take a picture with your iPhone, and the geo tags automatically pop up.http://www.freelinereport.com/freeline-5-27-08While we're on the subject of tags, we've got some startling news about the next version of FireFox. It will not have microformat support after all. Microformats are a form of semantic web browsing, a technology now used in Yahoo and Google searches and one that will be used in Digg in the near future. This new technology is hailed as the future of the web, and it seems sad that Firefox won't have them built in. Fear not, though, for you can always download the Operator plugin and experience web 3.0 first hand.http://www.freelinereport.com/freeline-5-27-08

Designing With Microformats
Designing With Microformats October 23rd, 2008 With the recent re-boot of MIX Online, one of the new features was the publishing of comprehensive articles centered around a particular subject. John Allsopp literally wrote the book on microformats. I’m a software engineer, speaker, writer, educator
RDFa is a W3C Recommendation
Last Wednesday, the World Wide Web Consortium made RDFa a W3c Recommendation, setting a standard for the inclusion and parsing of rich semantic data in XHTML documents. At first glance, RDFa sounds a lot like Microformats. And really, they’re both used in much the same way. But RDFa is more abstract; it provides a syntax to be followed, but not the actual terms used. As explained in the W3C document RDFa in XHTML: Syntax and Processing: Whereas microformats specify both a syntax for embeddi
Google Likes My hCard
Over the past several months, the battleground for my name, “Robert Elwell,” as a search term has been like trench warfare. While getting it from the top 30 to the top five in months prior, my personal website often suffered in terms of optimization due to a lack of external links and somewhat low keyword density for my name. Being on a .edu site, it had a slight advantage in some senses. I began joining a number of social networking services that were search engine visible so that I could do m
