  • R.I.P Madelyn Dunham~"The quiet hero"

    R.I.P Madelyn Dunham~"The quiet hero"
    37BlueJay
    59 sec - 4 Nov 2008

Madelyn Dunham, who watched from afar as her only grandson rapidly ascended the ranks of American politics to the brink of the presidency, did not live to see whether he was elected, but she did cast her vote and it COUNTS! http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,24605003-5006003,00.html "She has gone home," Obama said, his voice tinged with emotion as he briefly spoke of her death at a campaign rally here. "She died peacefully in her sleep with my sister at her side, so there's great joy instead of tears." Dunham was the final remaining immediate family member who helped raise Obama during his teenage years in Hawaii. He called her Toot, his shorthand for "tutu," a Hawaiian term for grandparent.Obama broke from the presidential campaign trail in late October to travel to Honolulu to bid his grandmother farewell. He spent part of two days with her, as she lay gravely ill in the small apartment where he lived from ages 10 to 18. Although Dunham was too sick to travel to see her grandson on the campaign trail, Obama and other family members said that she closely followed his bid for the presidency through cable television. Yet she became a figure in his campaign, seen through images in television commercials intended to give him a biographical anchor. His grandmother's illness had been weighing on him in recent weeks, friends said, which is why he insisted on interrupting his schedule to visit her late last month. Although she was gravely ill, aides said, Obama carried on a limited conversation with her."She was one of those quiet heroes that we have all across America," Obama said. "They're not famous. Their names are not in the newspapers, but each and every day they work hard. They aren't seeking the limelight. All they try to do is just do the right thing. In this crowd there are a lot of quiet heroes like that."

    Unknown length - 4 Nov 2008

Author: employmentcros Added: Sat, 16 Aug 2008 06:54:36 -0800 Duration: 218 Newspaper publisher, Gannett, announced on Thursday August 14 that they plan to cut 1,000 jobs, which includes lay offs of about 600 employees in its newspaper operations department. The job cuts affect 84 dailies… including The Arizona Republic, the Detroit Free Press, and 900 other non-daily newspapers. The largest-circulation newspaper, USA Today, was not affected by these cutbacks. The newspaper cites declining newspaper and ad sales for the cutbacks. Company spokeswoman Tara Connell says that the cutbacks represent 3 percent of their workforce… and says that they are considering other measures to cut costs… such as centralizing customer service, printing, financial and other functions and outsourcing some of their operations. Gannett shares rose $2.05, or 10.6 percent, to $21.31 in afternoon trading.

  • The Grey Ghost of Brisbane

    The Grey Ghost of Brisbane
    GhostHunterAustralia
    4 min - 4 Nov 2008

During a hot week in November 1965 two school boys walking through the pedestrian underpass beneath the railway lines that run through Victoria Park claimed that a ghost had come out of the stone wall of the underpass and chased them. They described it as a 'misty bluish white thing' that looked like a human torso with no head, no arms and no legs below the knee. One of the boys had to be treated for shock at nearby Royal Brisbane Hospital. All this was reported in the next mornings newspapers and Brisbane was instantly plunged into the grip of Ghost Mania.Every night thereafter for more than a week, huge crowds gathered in the park and surrounding area in the hope of catching a glimpse of the ghost. The scenes were reminiscent of 1903 when the ghost appeared the first time. People gathered then too, as they did also in 1922 and 1932 when they turned out for the ghosts second and third appearances.Observers in 1903 described it as looking like a tall nun in a grey habit. In 1922 and 1932 it was described simply as a shimmering grey form. The lack of traffic through the tunnel since the inner city bypass was created has meant little in the way of sightings. Join us to investigate the site of this famous grey ghost.

  • R.I.P Madelyn Dunham~"The quiet hero"

Madelyn Dunham, who watched from afar as her only grandson rapidly ascended the ranks of American politics to the brink of the presidency, did not live to see whether he was elected, but she did cast her vote and it COUNTS! http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,24605003-5006003,00.html She has gone home, Obama said, his voice tinged with emotion as he briefly spoke of her death at a campaign rally here. She died peacefully in her sleep with my sister at her side, so there's great joy instead of tears. Dunham was the final remaining immediate family member who helped raise Obama during his teenage years in Hawaii. He called her Toot, his shorthand for tutu, a Hawaiian term for grandparent.Obama broke from the presidential campaign trail in late October to travel to Honolulu to bid his grandmother farewell. Although she was gravely ill, aides said, Obama carried on a limited conversation with her.She was one of those quiet heroes that we have all across America, Obama said. They're not famous. Their names are not in the newspapers, but each and every day they work hard. They aren't seeking the limelight. All they try to do is just do the right thing. In this crowd there are a lot of quiet heroes like that.

  • Saying it With Strikes

The absence of HR in the public sector encourages a spirit of confrontation: ………………………………. This is the season of strikes. Bank staff (don’t call them workers) have been agitating for wage revisions and a ban on mergers. Reserve Bank of India employees have walked out demanding higher pension. Bureaucrats and public sector employees are waiting for the Pay Commission largesse, so they have been relatively quiet. But in many other places — as workers try and extract as much as they can by way o
