It wasn't though -- it was just alright... but it got me thinking.One of the celebrities discussed was a musician, Rihanna (if you are not familiar with her she sings that song 'You can stand under my umbrella, ella, ella, eh, eh, eh.') Rihanna has had endorsement type deals with:- Proctor and Gamble- Nike- Barbados Tourism Authority- J.C. Penny- Nokia- The juice and tea company, Fuze- and Totes Isotoner -- an umbrella company where she helped design a customized umbrella featuring, "sparkly fabrics and glittery charms on the handles."So, does that make her a sellout?Her manager Marc Jordan doesn't seem to think so. "We've turned down so many deals.... Either the fit wasn't right -- it was more about a check then extending Rihanna's brand -- or there was a disconnect between the brand and Rihanna."Nicely done Marc, you almost made me believe for a split second that it's not about money -- that you've turned down all sorts of endorsement opportunities that have come across your desk because, 'they just weren't a good fit.' What it sounds like to me, is that endorsement opportunities for products like, Ketchup, for example, have been available... and Mr. Jordan has been forced to turn them down after desperately trying to develop some explanation for how the product fits into those two words he cleverly uses, 'Rihanna's brand.'But here's the real question -- is there a problem with him trying to make whatever money he can off his client, and in turn, helping Rihanna make more money?Rihanna is what she is -- a typical pop artist that will fade away very, very soon -- she has no real brand... so if she doesn't make as much money as possible now -- her manager has done her a terrible disservice.So what is a sellout? Are Lebron James and Shaquille O'neal sellouts for doing the Vitamin Water commercials? I think not; it's quite likely that they actually drink Vitamin Water... the commercials are funny, they probably had a good time making them, and have an even better time watching them on TV -- plus they got paid, a lot! What about Angelina Jolie (who doesn't take many deals) endorsing St. John Knits... or Tiger Woods with Gatorade, Buick, Gillette, etc. Are they sellouts? Here's my thinking: when just about every celebrity you can think of has done endorsements it's not so much about who is a sellout, or, what is a sellout, or, how big of a sellout someone is. These days, what's interesting is who absolutely ISN'T -- because these people take what they do very, very seriously -- to the point where money is not at the top of the priority list; which is commendable. But is it wise?The New York Times article mentioned a band called The Killers want nothing to do with endorsement deals -- at all... which says to me they want people to remember one thing and one thing only when they think of them, and that of course is their music. Though I had heard of The Killers, I wasn't too familiar with their music so I decided to check them out. And here they are... are they saying something truly worthwhile with their music? Or would they be better off taking the next reasonable endorsement deal that comes their way? Not sure -- probably only time will tell...

This morning there was an article in the New York Times titled 'Nothing Sells Like Celebrity.' Sounded interesting. It wasn't though -- it was just alright... but it got me thinking.One of the celebrities discussed was a musician, Rihanna (if you are not familiar with her she sings that song 'You can stand under my umbrella, ella, ella, eh, eh, eh.') Rihanna has had endorsement type deals with:- Proctor and Gamble- Nike- Barbados Tourism Authority- J.C. Penny- Nokia- The juice and tea company, Fuze- and Totes Isotoner -- an umbrella company where she helped design a customized umbrella featuring, sparkly fabrics and glittery charms on the handles.So, does that make her a sellout?Her manager Marc Jordan doesn't seem to think so. We've turned down so many deals.... Either the fit wasn't right -- it was more about a check then extending Rihanna's brand -- or there was a disconnect between the brand and Rihanna.Nicely done Marc, you almost made me believe for a split second that it's not about money -- that you've turned down all sorts of endorsement opportunities that have come across your desk because, 'they just weren't a good fit.' What it sounds like to me, is that endorsement opportunities for products like, Ketchup, for example, have been available... and Mr. Jordan has been forced to turn them down after desperately trying to develop some explanation for how the product fits into those two words he cleverly uses, 'Rihanna's brand.'But here's the real question -- is there a problem with him trying to make whatever money he can off his client, and in turn, helping Rihanna make more money?Rihanna is what she is -- a typical pop artist that will fade away very, very soon -- she has no real brand... so if she doesn't make as much money as possible now -- her manager has done her a terrible disservice.So what is a sellout? Are Lebron James and Shaquille O'neal sellouts for doing the Vitamin Water commercials? I think not; it's quite likely that they actually drink Vitamin Water... the commercials are funny, they probably had a good time making them, and have an even better time watching them on TV -- plus they got paid, a lot! What about Angelina Jolie (who doesn't take many deals) endorsing St. John Knits... or Tiger Woods with Gatorade, Buick, Gillette, etc. Are they sellouts? Here's my thinking: when just about every celebrity you can think of has done endorsements it's not so much about who is a sellout, or, what is a sellout, or, how big of a sellout someone is. These days, what's interesting is who absolutely ISN'T -- because these people take what they do very, very seriously -- to the point where money is not at the top of the priority list; which is commendable. But is it wise?The New York Times article mentioned a band called The Killers want nothing to do with endorsement deals -- at all... which says to me they want people to remember one thing and one thing only when they think of them, and that of course is their music. Though I had heard of The Killers, I wasn't too familiar with their music so I decided to check them out. And here they are... are they saying something truly worthwhile with their music? Or would they be better off taking the next reasonable endorsement deal that comes their way? Not sure -- probably only time will tell...
