A great throw can do much more than conceal a grotty old sofa. Rich, velvety fabrics and intricate trimmings evoke a feeling of decadence and grandeur that will seep into the atmosphere. With the right materials and a little know-how you can create your very own luxury beaded throw. Time to complete the job: 2 hours Approximate budget: £25 Sew the fabric together Sew the fabric together Lay out both pieces of fabric so that the right sides are together ie the satin and the velvet are on the inside. Machine-sew the layers together, going around all the edges but leaving a large opening of about 30 cm (1 foot) at the top in the centre. Turn it inside out Turn it inside out Cut away the excess fabric on the corners so that you'll have nice sharp points on your throw. Turn it inside out by pulling the material through the opening that you left at the top. This should be quite easy because the satin is nice and slippery. Lay your throw flat on your work surface. Sew up the opening Sew up the opening Find the opening that you didn't sew together. Fold the edges inwards to make a seam and then hand sew it together using slip stitching. Slip stitching is where you catch threads from opposite pieces of fabric and sew them together in a zigzag pattern. Decorate with beaded trim Decorate with beaded trim Locate the short end or the width of your fabric and cut a piece of beaded trim to match the length. Beaded trim usually comes attached to a piece of tape. Pin the tape carefully to the edge of your throw. Finally, hand-sew the beads in place.
